Edgemont’s NEW School Bell Schedule for 2009-10

 

Dear Parents,

 

      We will be adding 7 more early out days for Professional Development to Edgemont's school calendar this year.   I talked briefly with the PTA Board about it back in May, and I felt they were positive.  I’ve also recently communicated with our Faculty and current Community Council members, and they too are supportive, so it was presented to the the Provo School District Board of Education in their regular meeting on Tues. 8/11/09, and it was approved. 

 

     We’re adding these 7 early-out days so we can continue to do the Professional Development we've done when we had more Teacher Work Days (students gone, but teachers still at school for training & collaboration, etc.).  The Legislature cut the funding for ALL of the Teacher Work Days this year; the district has replaced the funding for 3 of the days before school, but only 1 day during the school year (it's a total cut of 4 full training days).   We’ve already had 1 early-out day on the first Fri. of each month (9 early out days).  These 7 Early-Out Days will be on the third Fri. of the months from Sept. through May (but NOT Oct. or Dec.).  To compensate for this we have changed our regular school day ENDING time to 3:15 (it used to be 3:10), as is shown on the new bell schedule below).  The time equals out (it actually adds 2 hours of time to the year), so we meet all state laws and rules in this regard.   

 

Our faculty is supportive of this change so we can avoid having to do our professional development until 5:00 or 5:30 p.m. after a full day of teaching school.

 

We will continue to provide quality early-out day activities with our After-School program for those students that want or need to participate.  See Rhonda Hinckley, our After-School Program Coordinator, for more details, or email her at RhondaH@provo.edu.

If the legislature later reallocates funding for the Teacher Work Days (formerly called Teacher Quality Days), we may be able to go back to holding Early-Outs Days on the 1st Friday of each month.
